OLIVIA

I first wrote OLIVIA with the intention of one book only. The story in my mind started with an executive of a large advertising company refusing to promote her, choosing the men in the organization to move on. The Glass Ceiling.

Then I realized, because this a romance, what if Olivia finds her fiancĂ© with another woman? What if this woman is a tramp? That seemed much more exciting than Olivia's business problems.
Next, I thought, what if her fiancé is the son of the owner? What could Olivia do then?

I solved the problem by having Olivia move back to her small Ohio town to tend to the Aunt who raised her and then taking over the family business...as Editor of THE REXFORD PRESS.

I loved setting up pitfalls for Olivia. Editorials that divided the town. An off and on relationship with the handsome Dr. Mitch James, and weekly dinners with her new friends. These friends set up a scenario for my next book, VICTORIA.

UNDER THE GRANITE LIES

I had a great conversation with author, Kay Phoenix recently. Here is part of our discussion.

1.      Tell me about your background and how you became interested in writing.

I’m an artist at heart, and as such, I can’t help but express myself in creative ways: painting, drawing, photography, and yes, writing.  It isn’t a question of deciding to do it, I need to do it.

2.      What is the title of the book you’re working on now?

I’m currently working on Book 2 of a contemporary series for The Wild Rose Press titled “The Zookeeper: Daring Hearts Book 2”. Here is the blurb:
Elizabeth Tanner was raised in a Zoo.  Literally.  But now that Zoo is in danger, not only from falling ticket sales, but also from a mysterious illness afflicting the animals.

Frank Adams, the newest Animal Care attendant, spent time behind bars himself.

But, in this Zoo, even the strongest bars can’t hold back the truth.

And the truth will be set free.

Book 1 is titled “Steele and Stone: Daring Hearts Book 1”. The release date is pending but should be Fall, 2016.  Here is the blurb:

Elle Thompson was raised in Denver.  She paints.  She hikes.  She knows how to avoid cougar attacks.

The only cougars that Michael Williams usually worries about are the ones that wear leopard print leggings on 5th Avenue.

But, when Michael’s acquisition firm sets its sights on her family business, his tidy life goes awry.  As his life unravels, so do all of his pre-conceived notions of love, and what a perfect partner should be.

3.      What is your most difficult part of writing?

Deciding what to work on next.  I’m sure you’ve heard the quote about a creative mind being like having fifty windows open in your browser at once?  Yeah, that.

4.      What part of writing do you enjoy most?

I love when the characters take over and bring the stories places I’d never dreamt they’d go. They have a life all their own.

5.      What part don’t you like?

I hate feeling like I don’t have enough time to get it all done.  But, will we ever?

6.      Tell me about your typical day of writing.

First, I accomplish whatever tasks need to be done for the day (pay bills, etc.), then my mind is free of the burden of worry so I can focus.  I will usually have coffee and a bowl of almonds or crackers next to me. Also, I usually have a living carpet under my feet (my dog).

7.      What project are you working on now?

8.      Do you have a tip for aspiring authors?
Just do it!  If you have a story within you, let it live!
